Been to South Africa many times. Never had anything bad happen to me, people were always nice and friendly. Mind you, I was cautious about where I went and at what time of the day or night. Did see some bad stuff happen to other people, fortunately nothing like a shooting or stabbing. One time while getting petrol, my wife went inside to use the facilities and buy a drink. I paid the pump attendant in cash. When my wife returned, we had already driven off about 500m when she said that she had paid for the fuel by credit card inside. So we turned around and went back. The pump attendant already figured out that we paid twice, he had the cash in a zip-loc bag in his pocket, ready to give it back to me. Good, honest hard working people. And this was at a place that was not exactly in what people would consider to be a "safe for tourists" area. There's good people and bad people regardless of where you go.

I've been learning isiZulu for 3 months now, mostly because i saw it as a fun way to learn more about the culture and I am definitely glad I chose to do it. I cannot stop jamming to amapiano now I know what the lyrics mean :D and I agree with the girls at the end that it is always the black south africans having to bridge the cultural gap with their language abilities, so why not try to change that starting with myself? Obviously it is much easier to do when you have a passion for languages.

There's a trader in Soweto comes from Bangladesh who speaks Sesotho fluently, it's amazing. It shows how superior mental conditioning has derived white and Indian South Africans to take advantage of learning African languages

Just wanted to state that the point some of the people are trying to push across of whites in general not being interested in learning the black languages is simply not true. If you want to really delve into this subject, you will find that in the older days it was very bilateral, especially in the apartheid times which should be considered the worst of times, we had a great spread of black people speaking Afrikaans and white people speaking the local African languages especially on the farms. These days everyone has simply moved on and chose English as the preferred intermediary language of choice. It's interesting that black and white people are somewhat more apart these days than even in the apartheid times. (In some respects) I will use one good example, my Stepdad speaks Sesotho, my wives' father speaks Afrikaans, but neither of us speaks each other's language, let that sink in. The language gap is generally due to the modernisation of English and westernisation of South Africa as a whole. Most of the people in this video moaning about whites not being interested in their languages are not fluent in Afrikaans or Dutch. My moto is if you don't like the way things are then BE the change compared to simply complaining about it. My mother tongue is Afrikaans, my wives mother tongue is Sesotho, and we mostly communicate via English although we know a few words of each other's language. My favourite words in our personal love language are Sesotho words and my accent has also started changing somewhat closer to that of my wive who has a heavy Sotho accent.

Unfortunately there is stigma attached to dating someone from a different ethnic group here in the UK. You won't hear people saying it in public but behind closed doors it's different story. I know times have changed but prejudices still exist at all levels of society. I'm a white male and I will say it's easier for someone who is caucasian to progress further in life.

I think there's something so wholesome about this sort of thing, it's hard to fully explain why speaking other peoples languages well makes them light up so much, probably just because it's so surprising, impressive, but it also maybe feels like someone's put in a lot of effort to speak to you on your terms, which is quite touching.
